I believe I ask this every year, but I'll ask it again, "where has the month of January gone?"
We've been quite busy here in the Pathfinder Team Basecamp! Here's a little bit of what we've been up to:
In our reading workshop we continue to work on monitoring our thinking while we read, making ourselves better readers. We continue to write and talk about our reading on daily basis. Within the next month we'll begin holding Book Clubs where students will be reading the same book in small groups and meeting weekly to discuss their thinking.
In writing, we wrapped up our unit on informational writing. Students have been using the 4th grade set of iPads daily in our writing workshop for research and writing. Students have also been posting some of their completed pieces over at our KidBlog site. I'm impressed by how much writing many of the Pathfinders have been doing and how well their writing has improved. Now we're on to studying persuasive writing and are thinking a lot about how to convince someone to take our side using great reasons and strong details.
As you know by the homework that has been coming home, we've been working hard on multi-digit multiplication. Students are doing a great job keeping their work organized and paying attention to place value. Unfortunately, many of our errors are now simple addition errors. Please help remind your student to slow down and check over their work.
In Science we're working on a unit of study about Energy. Students are finishing up their Investigation Summaries from their first investigation where they observed how heat was transferred to items and posting them to KidBlog.
In Social Studies we spent a month talking about migration - the movement of humans within the United States - and now we're studying immigration - the movement of people to the United States from other countries. Ask your student about the push and pull factors for the immigrants from Europe - They should be able to tell you all about it.
If you ever have any questions or comments about what we're working on, please feel free to let me know.
